Uncomplicated: Scripture

Uncomplicating Scripture: Finding God in the Simple Moments

Let’s be real—few things can feel as overwhelming as scripture. The Bible is big, ancient, and let’s be honest, sometimes feels like it’s written in a language from another planet. If you’ve ever cracked it open and thought, Where do I even start?, you’re in good company.

But here’s the thing: engaging with scripture doesn’t have to be so complicated. In fact, it was never meant to be.

For so many of us, the struggle is how we approach scripture. We treat it like an item on a checklist—something to “get through” or a puzzle we’re supposed to solve. But what if we shifted that perspective? What if scripture wasn’t about completing a reading plan or decoding a mystery, but simply about meeting God right where we are?

Start Small, Start Simple

Here’s one of the most freeing truths I’ve learned: you don’t have to master scripture. Like, ever. God isn’t sitting there with a gold star waiting for you to memorize every verse or understand every bit of context.

Sometimes, all it takes is one verse—maybe even one word—to change your whole day. It could be something you stumble across on your social feed or hear in a worship song. That’s enough. Let that one truth sit with you. Reflect on it. Pray about it. Carry it with you in the chaos of carpool lines, laundry piles, or meetings.

The goal isn’t to conquer the Bible like it’s a to-do list. It’s to let it speak to you in the small moments, right where you are.

Be Curious, Not Overwhelmed

Curiosity is one of the most underrated gifts when it comes to scripture. When you read something and it doesn’t make sense (which will happen… often), give yourself permission to pause. Ask questions:

  • What might this mean for me?

  • Why would this have mattered to the people it was written for?

You don’t need all the answers. Some things might not make sense right away—or ever—and that’s okay. Scripture isn’t a pop quiz you’re meant to ace. It’s an invitation. An opportunity to grow, to learn, and to connect with God.

Let Scripture Meet You Where You Are

Here’s the thing: your season of life matters.

Some seasons might have you doing deep dives, or reading huge chunks of scripture at a time. But in other seasons—maybe ones that feel heavy or chaotic—just a single verse can be enough to remind you that God’s got you.

There’s no “right” way to engage with scripture. If life feels overwhelming, maybe start with a verse-of-the-day notification from a Bible app. Or dive into the Psalms—they’re raw and relatable in a way that feels like a deep breath. Don’t stress about how much you’re reading or how quickly you’re getting through it. It’s not about finishing—it’s about listening.

God Knows Your Heart

You know what I love most about scripture? God meets you exactly where you are. He’s not waiting for you to hit some advanced level of faith before He shows up.

He knows your context, your struggles, your strengths, your doubts—everything. He’s in the big, theological questions and in the quiet, simple truths. God is present in the moments when you’re overwhelmed, when you’re curious, and when all you can muster is a quick Help.

The Gift of Scripture

At its core, scripture isn’t a burden. It’s not a chore, a ladder to climb, or some spiritual homework assignment. It’s a gift. A way to draw closer to God, to be reminded of His presence, and to find encouragement for whatever season you’re walking through.

So, let’s uncomplicate things, shall we?

Today, give yourself permission to keep it simple. Pick one verse, one word, or one idea, and let it settle into your heart. Don’t rush past it. Reflect on it. Pray about it. Carry it with you through the noise of your day.

Because here’s the truth: it’s not about knowing more. It’s about living out the simple, life-changing truths that God whispers into your heart. Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is just start small.

God will meet you there. He always does.
