Who Am I, Really?
Ever had one of those seasons where you’re asking, Who even am I? Maybe life just threw you a curveball—career change, a big move, a breakup, or just that general life-is-chaotic feeling.
Identity is one of those things we don’t always think about—until something shakes us up and suddenly, we’re left wondering.
When Identity Feels Complicated
We live in a world full of loud voices telling us who we should be. Culture, family, social media, past experiences—they all shape the way we see ourselves. And sometimes, without even realizing it, we start defining ourselves by:
What we do
What we’ve achieved (or where we’ve failed)
The roles we play
The labels others have given us
But what happens when those things shift? When the job title disappears, the relationship ends, or we mess up—do we lose our worth?
Here’s the truth: If our identity is rooted in something temporary, we’ll always be on shaky ground.
You Are More Than…
It’s so easy to define ourselves by external things. But those things? They don’t make up the core of who we are.
Let me remind you:
🚫 You are not just what you do.
🚫 You are not your past mistakes.
🚫 You are not who others say you are.
If we let shifting circumstances define us, we’ll always feel unsteady. But when we root our identity in something unshakable—our relationship with God—we find clarity and, with some work - confidence.
What God Says About You
One of the most powerful truths about identity comes from 2 Corinthians 5:17:
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
That means your past doesn’t define you. Your failures don’t determine your worth. You are not the sum of your mistakes. You are a child of God, created with purpose, and loved beyond measure.
Saint or Sinner? How God Sees You
This might surprise you, but in the Bible, Paul never refers to believers as “sinners.” Even though he openly talks about struggles with sin, he consistently calls believers saints (1 Corinthians 1:2, Ephesians 1:1, Philippians 1:1, Romans 1:7).
That’s powerful. Because while we still wrestle with sin, our identity isn’t sinner—our identity is redeemed. We are made new by grace.
Living From Your True Identity
So, what does this actually change for us? If we truly believed our identity was secure in Christ, how would we live differently?
✨ We wouldn’t be trapped by past mistakes.
✨ We wouldn’t chase approval from the world.
✨ We wouldn’t let fear keep us from stepping into God’s calling.
✨ We would live with freedom, confidence, and purpose.
Instead of saying, I am my failures, we’d say, I am redeemed.
Instead of saying, I am not enough, we’d say, I am chosen and loved.
A Challenge for You
If you’ve ever struggled with your identity, take a second to reflect. Where are you placing your worth? Is it in what you do? What others say? Or in who God says you are?
This week, I challenge you to grab a truth from Scripture and let it sink in. Maybe it’s 2 Corinthians 5:17 (You are a new creation). Maybe it’s Romans 8:1 (There is no condemnation for those in Christ). Whatever it is, hold onto it and live like it’s true—because it is.
Let’s Talk!
